God knows

Desperate circumstances call for desperate measures - and that’s certainly true for David as insanely jealous Saul continues his pursuit. David decided that his only recourse was to take shelter in a Philistine city. And that was an incredibly dangerous thing to do, because remember that David had come to fame by killing the Philistine champion, Goliath. And the celebratory song that the women of Israel had sang about David had even become known in the enemy city, as David discovered when he arrived there. And so there was only one thing David could do to avoid permanent capture or even execution - he pretended to be insane, thus posing no threat to Achish, King of Gath. The sarcastic and humorous way that Achish responded to David’s antics shows what a bewildering place the city of Gath was - he announces that there is no shortage of madmen in his territory. This must have been a season of real threat for David.

But in the midst of his pantomime antics, David affirms that the Lord knows his pain, and that every teardrop is recorded. When life is bewildering, surely there’s comfort in knowing that we are not alone in the universe, and more than that, we are not ignored. Even if the season of pain continues, and there is no intervention to stop it, this is true: God sees and knows.
